Do you ever think of Jesus as being in a hurry? I don't. I see him having time for each of us.
The secret to a successful visit I've observed is the person who has learned the secret of taking time to make the other person feel important. This was first brought to my attention more than 30 years ago whenever an Alabama legislator came to my office. Busy man as he was frequently traveling between Montgomery and the lower part of Alabama, he never appeared to be in a hurry. Rather than standing in the doorway to chat, he sat down, appeared to relax as if he had come to spend the day. His visits were never long, maybe 5 to 6 minutes but while there his relaxed appearance made me feel he was there for me.
I've observed this also with pastors. The most memorable visits are with those who did not appear to be in a rush. Pastor Bob Barker, Sr. visiting the children' s wing at Mobile Infirmary in 1952 would pull up a chair and visit even with young children. This year a visiting pastor exhibited that he had learned the secret. His visit was a pleasure as he appeared to relax and to be enjoying the visit although I am one of thousands in his care.
Even in passing—hide the rush—a pastor and his wife exiting a building as I entered with no place to sit paused long enough to touch and give reassuring words.
Now you know the secret—put it to practice, relax and enjoy the results.
2 Corinthians 6:2 (ESV)
For he says, "In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you."
